UK spouse visa documents: the complete checklist for 2026

What documents do you need for a UK spouse visa in 2026?

A UK spouse visa (also called a UK partner visa or leave to remain as a partner) requires a specific set of documents to prove eligibility under Appendix FM of the Immigration Rules. Missing a single required document is one of the most common causes of refusal — and UKVI does not give you a second chance to submit it.

This guide covers every document category required for a spouse visa application, what UKVI expects from each one, and the most common gaps that lead to refusals.

Sponsor documents

The UK-based sponsor (the British citizen or settled person) must provide:

Identity and immigration status

  • Valid UK passport or British National (Overseas) passport
  • If not British: evidence of settled status (Indefinite Leave to Remain, EU Settlement Scheme) or pre-settled status with additional evidence
  • Previous passports if relevant to travel history

Financial evidence — the financial requirement

The sponsor must meet the £29,000 gross annual income threshold (as of April 2026) unless an exempt category applies. Acceptable financial evidence includes:

If employed:

  • 6 months of original payslips (P60 where available)
  • Letter from employer confirming job title, salary, and employment type (permanent/contract)
  • 6 months of personal bank statements showing salary credits

If self-employed:

  • Latest year's self-assessment tax return (SA302) and HMRC tax year overview
  • Business accounts or accountant's certificate
  • 12 months of business bank statements

If using savings:

  • Bank statements covering the full 6-month holding period
  • Funds must have been held for at least 6 months continuously
  • Minimum £62,500 in cash savings (at time of writing)

Important: The financial requirement changed in April 2024 and has been updated since. Always verify the current threshold at the time of application.

Applicant documents

Identity

  • Valid passport with at least 6 months validity beyond the intended stay
  • Previous passports showing travel history
  • Biometric residence permit (if already in the UK)

Current immigration status

  • Visa stamps or entry clearance for any previous UK visits
  • Evidence of compliance with previous visa conditions

Relationship evidence

This is the category that causes the most refusals. UKVI expects evidence that demonstrates a genuine, subsisting relationship. Required documents include:

Core relationship documents

  • Original marriage certificate (with certified translation if not in English)
  • If not married: evidence of a relationship akin to marriage for at least 2 years

Evidence of cohabitation or ongoing contact

  • Correspondence addressed to both parties at the same address
  • Joint bank account statements or utility bills in joint names
  • Lease agreement in both names
  • Mortgage statements showing both names

Evidence of regular contact (if not living together)

  • Flight tickets, hotel bookings, and boarding passes from visits
  • Telephone bills or call records
  • Photographs together with dates and locations
  • Letters, emails, and messages (printed and organised chronologically)

Evidence of how the relationship developed

  • Wedding photographs or photos from the relationship
  • Witness statements from family or friends
  • Social media showing the relationship (optional but helpful for borderline cases)

Accommodation documents

You must show that the sponsor's UK accommodation is adequate for the couple (and any dependants) without recourse to public funds.

  • Tenancy agreement in the sponsor's name (covering the period of the application)
  • Property ownership documents or mortgage statement
  • Letter from landlord confirming permission for the applicant to live there
  • Local authority housing letter if in social housing

English language requirement

The applicant must demonstrate English language ability at A1 level (or higher for further leave applications). Acceptable evidence:

  • SELT test certificate from an approved provider (Trinity College London, IELTS SELT, etc.)
  • Degree taught in English (if from a majority English-speaking country as defined by the Home Office)
  • Evidence of nationality from an exempt country

Additional documents for specific situations

Children included in the application

  • Children's birth certificates
  • Consent from any other parent with parental responsibility
  • Evidence the other parent is informed of the application

Previous marriages

  • Divorce certificates (with certified translations if not in English)
  • Death certificates of former spouses

Common document errors that cause refusals

  1. Bank statements that don't cover the full 6 months — gaps of even a few days can be used to question the evidence
  2. Employer letters that are too vague — must confirm exact salary, employment type, and period of employment
  3. Relationship evidence that is only recent — UKVI looks for a continuous pattern, not a burst of evidence gathered at application time
  4. Missing certified translations — any document not in English must have a certified translation
  5. Savings that appeared recently — funds must meet the 6-month holding requirement
